Formed in 1970, The Nautical Institute is an international professional body which aims to encourage and promote a high standard of qualification, competence and knowledge among those in control of seagoing craft. The Institute is consulted on nautical matters, including representation on governmental committees, standards’ institutions, industry committees and the mass media. Seaways, the monthly Journal of The Nautical Institute, is now recognised as one of the leading maritime journals. It is designed to advance high professional standards and promote fellowship within the profession, which is achieved through contributions and debate directed at a practical seafaring level. The Nautical Institute runs a number of self-improvement Certificate and Diploma schemes for the nautical profession, including D.P. Operators’ Certificates. It also publishes technical books and proceedings, and provides a freely available service of confidential marine accident reports (MARS), through Seaways, which enables all readers to share their experiences
