The Tyre Industry Council was established over a decade ago with the principal objective of improving tyre safety awareness.

The Council is a not-for-profit, non-commercial body, funded by tyre manufacturers and the majority of UK tyre retailers, via its Associates programme.

The main, and most successful, activity of the TIC is the roadside tyre check programme, run with the support and assistance of police forces throughout the UK. These checks have been highly effective in reducing the number of illegal and defective tyres on the UK's roads. Overall, the percentage of dangerous tyres on UK roads has fallen dramatically, from 17% six years ago, to 11% today. The Council believes this has had a major impact on reducing road traffic collisions and casualties.

The Council is also involved in other tyre and road safety initiatives, including tyre awareness seminars for the Police, Trading Standards Officers and other agencies involved in road safety. In addition, the Council has developed a series of information leaflets, called InfoTIC, which are available to the general public.

A Responsible Recycler Scheme operates under the auspices of the TIC, which ensures its member companies, who are responsible for the majority of used tyre collections in the UK, re-use, recycle or dispose of scrap tyres in an environmentally responsible way.

The Council comprises The British Rubber Manufactures Association (BRMA), The Imported Tyre Manufacturers' Association (ITMA), tyre retailers through the Associates programme and its work is supported by all sections of the UK tyre industry.
