From the oil well to the petrol pump, from the depths of the North Sea to warm homes around the UK, Shell delivers the energy that Britain needs. Shell produces 20% of Britain's crude oil, 17% of its gas and 15% of its petrochemicals. Each year we pay about £365 million in UK taxes and collect some £4.6 billion in VAT and excise duties from our customers. We employ over 9,000 people directly and a further 6,000 in our subsidiary businesses.
Shell businesses in the UK are part of the Royal Dutch/Shell Group of companies, one of the largest industrial undertakings in the world. The UK is the home of one of the parent companies of the Group - The "Shell" Transport and Trading Company, p.l.c. which is based at Shell Centre on the south bank of the Thames in London. Shell Centre is one of the two central offices of the Group - the other is in The Hague in the Netherlands.
