GNER is owned by Sea Containers Group, which has worldwide experience in passenger transport, leisure interests and marine container leasing. Sea Containers was awarded a seven-year franchise in 1996 to operate intercity services along Britain's East Coast main line, a franchise which GNER has retained to this day, recently being awarded a 10-year extension.
