BLS AG is an independent company operated according to private-sector management principles which has successfully positioned itself in regional passenger traffic in the Berne metropolitan area, the "Espace Mittelland", the Bernese Oberland, the Valais, Emmental, Lucerne and the Jura and freight traffic through the Alps. BLS's strategic objective is to assume a leading role with its rail-based transport services, and capitalise fully on transport and competitive opportunities. The infrastructure used in pursuing that objective is operated by BLS efficiently, reliably and with high-performance criteria.
BLS also operates car transport services through the Lötschberg and fon through the Simplon as well as motor-boat services on Lake Thun and Lake Brienz.
On the 12.12.2004, the BLS took over system responsibility and market coordination for Berne's S-Bahn network and simultaneously withdrew from long-distance transport services.
