Let’s start with some figures: Every year, SBB transports about 253 million passengers and 58 million tonnes of freight. Its 3000 route kilometres may be modest by comparison with the 24'500 km making up Switzerland’s public transport network as a whole, but its performance is impressive: SBB trains account for 87% of all passenger-km and 90% of tonne-km.
