Tanzania Railways Corporation
Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) was established by Tanzania Railways Corporation Act No. 11 of 1977, assented to by President on 27th july 1977 and came to operation on 21st October, 1977. By the provision of the Act, TRC was vested with the management of the affairs, properties and operations of the defunct East African Railways Corporation (EARC) - Tanzania Regions subject to the directions of Minister of Communications and Transport. In his letter reference No.TYC/R/20/17/12 of 23rd july 1988, the Minister of Finance, acting under section 5(4) of the East African Community Mediation Agreement Act, 1987 (Act No.2 of 1987), transferred ownership of defunct EARC Tanzania Regions assets to Tanzania Railways Corporation.By then, the services included operating railways freight and passenger services, road services for passengers and freight, marine services on inland waterways as well as providing hotel and catering services.
Starting from the early 1990s, however, TRC has undergone a restructuring process with gradual divestiture of non-core services. Consequently, the Road Services has been fully divested. Hotels and Catering Services have been franchised to third parties while marine services are now provided separately by ‘Marine Services Company Limited’, effective 21st June 1999. As such, TRC is now providing only the core railway services for freight and passengers.
