Grayson Mitchell, Inc.
Grayson Mitchell, Inc. was started in 1976 by H. Grayson Mitchell, Jr. Grayson started as a truck driver when he was 17 years old. After becoming a dispatcher for several years, he became general manager with another trucking company. With time Grayson began to purchase trucks of his own and lease them to that company. Eventually he made the decision to strike out on his own with approximately 22 trucks. The company has grown from a small flatbed carrier to Virginia's largest home-based flatbed carrier. With a fleet of several hundred units and growing interest by drivers, our prospects for growth are promising. We run our drivers primarily along the eastern U.S. with our "System Drivers" running the eastern half of the United States. We have a growing local business in the Virginia area, as well as a few dedicated positions. Our log truck business remains small, as many times these drivers have opted to move into regional and over-the-road positions.
We hire owner/operators to help with our customers' requests for more trucks to move their freight. Recently we have begun operations that help a driver make a career change to become an owner/operator through our lease purchase program. These drivers, as well as our company drivers, enjoy our "Home on Weekends."
We began expanding in 1997 with our second terminal located in Dillon, South Carolina. In the future, we are looking at expansion in several ways, including one additional terminal further to our west.
Company Philosophy
Grayson Mitchell, Inc. is dedicated and focused on being the best flatbed carrier on the East Coast of the United States.
This includes how we are seen by our truck drivers, other drivers in the industry, our customers, and the general motoring public with whom we share the road.
We strive to be a "Driver Friendly Company" and are constantly making changes to lead the way to meeting our drivers' needs. This is why we continue to get our drivers home on weekends!
We honestly believe that there is very little gained by having a driver sitting in a truck stop where he will do nothing to his benefit. Often the load cannot be delivered, because the consignee employees are home. With many other trucking companies, the truck driver sits with nothing to do but "spend his hard-earned money" at the truck stop all weekend long.
Our drivers, because they are home on weekends, as well as occasionally during the week, have an opportunity to enjoy a life beyond trucking; they have hobbies and enjoy time with their families. We, as a company, also benefit from this. We feel a driver who each week has time to really relax and know what is going on with his family first-hand, concentrates on his job and is a safer and more productive driver.
In any trucking company, your reputation with the shippers and consignees is crucial. We know our drivers are our most visible representatives, as well as the "driving force" that accomplishes the tasks to "deliver on time, undamaged freight, safely, and with pride." It takes drivers who are dedicated professionals, who are satisfied and comfortable with their employer, and who believe in safety to provide the first-class service that Grayson Mitchell Inc. prides itself on.
We have earned and maintained a great reputation with our customers, mainly because we have a very content "Driver Force." These drivers provide a service to our customers that is second to none. We provide our drivers with state-of-the-art equipment, such as modern computer-controlled engines, all air-ride suspensions for our trailers and trucks, and air-ride cabs in many cases. Communication with our office and dispatchers is done through QualComm satellite tracking and communications system. This system also allows us to quickly route them or send specific door-to-door directions. Our drivers are never but a moment away from contact with us. Our drivers are backed and supported by an experienced staff and management team, many of whom have been drivers in the past and still occasionally take to the road.
We are constantly working on our safety record, as well as safety issues, and we are dedicated to the proposition that "safety is always first." Because we believe that educated drivers are safer drivers, we have participated in the "NO ZONE" presentation with local high schools. We are currently expanding a safety program that is guided by our drivers, whom we feel "know best the problems frequently faced by today's truckers."
