Ocean Rescue Systems was founded on the principle that most Public Safety department water rescuers were wholly unprepared for the demands of real-life water rescue in anything other than swimming pools or life-guard patrolled beaches. This was mainly due to a lack of thoughtful and systematic analysis of water-related accidents and the hazards they pose to rescuers in situations such as floods, swiftwater, rocky surf-washed shorelines, and low-head dams. We began by developing some of the first-ever boat-deployed Rescue Swimmer training programs at the request of the Canadian Coast Guard (Search and Rescue Branch). In the years since we have trained literally thousands of persons from hundreds of Fire, Police, Rescue, Marine Patrols and US Coast Guard units, and our Fast Rescue Craft and Rescue Swimmer programs have become the standard against which all others are measured. Along the way we have collected dozens of stories of the effectiveness that this training has had in the real-life rescue of those in peril
