City of York Council has relaunched its popular Dial and Ride bus service to provide door-to-door transport to older and disabled residents across the city.
Run by the York Wheels charity, the service collects people from their homes and takes them directly to the destination of their choice in York. It was previously only available to those living in urban areas, but can now be used by people living in all areas of the city. Following its re-launch, Dial and Ride will be able to carry 25 per cent more passengers that it could before and also boasts a fleet of three brand new wheelchair-accessible vehicles.

Re-launching the new service, Dan Johnson, the council's Principal Transport Planner, explained: "Dial and Ride is a lifeline for people who find it difficult to get around. Without Dial and Ride many local people would not be able to leave their homes. The service enables people to live more independent lives."

Dan added: "The service has always been popular for a trip to the supermarket, but now we also offer a service to Edmund Wilson Swimming Pool and to local shops in areas such as Acomb and Haxby."
