Based on the State-autonomous government changes of 1978, Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) was created on September 5, 1979 to operate the publicly owned railways belonging to the FEVE in Catalonia. Thus, it became the first public company created by the first government of the restored Autonomous government.
FGC is made up of various business units: the Railway Network, which consists of the Barcelona-Vallès and Llobregat-Anoia metropolitan lines, and the Lleida-La Pobla de Segur line. Within the mountain area, it handles the Montserrat Line (Montserrat rack train and the funiculars of Sant Joan and Santa Cova), the La Molina and the Vall de Núria Lines.
The metropolitan lines provide a service within the urban area, within the city of Barcelona, as well as to the suburbs and outlying areas. One, international width line connects Barcelona with Sant Cugat, Terrassa and Sabadell, and another, metric width line connects Barcelona with Martorell, Manresa and Igualada. The cargo-line branches link Manresa with Súria and Sellent Mines and provide a connection with the Barcelona port.
As a public company, the mission of FGC is to efficiently and effectively manage the services and infrastructures assigned, in an effort to aid and improve mobility within Catalonia by offering the general public more profitable leisure services that are in keeping with expectations.
Consequently, within this framework, the FGC has to be an example as a leader public company in Catalan with constant innovation, growth and respect to the environment.
